i want people to discuss my work on twitter! further proof that the wheels of the zeitgeist turn if ever so slowly.
should i go to brooklyn or l.a. for law school, tao? i have to decide tomorrow and its the hardest decision i have ever had to make in my life.
l.a. if you like sunlight and driving maybe
I read this and felt weird about the use of twitter. discourse seems more or less legit, though. seems standard for what a college student says in a lit class. still think i got a little luddite in my bones, though
"My personal oppinion is that Aaron may need to get God in his life"
this person gets it
it would be good if you used tweets from college students as blurbs for the back of richard yates.
I think this is awesome. Seriously. Really awesome. Although I share Alex’s concern about the medium. I wonder how much the assignment is worth (the more it’s worth the more “legit” it may be): 30 tweets at about 140 characters per tweet would amount to a respectable ~4,200 words. And while it does seem a wee-bit informal to “tweet” in an academic environment if that’s what it takes to read very-very-contemporary lit. then so be it.
Also, I’ve included my reinterpretation of the assignment below. I’m not too serious about it. And I’m painfully aware that it might come off as annoying or troll’ish (I’d want to know why that is.) Maybe it doesn’t. If anyone is serious about doing this let me know. Here’s my little “take” on the assignment:
________________________
About midday, I will implore each of you to sign up with a Twitter username and register with Twitter.com. During the second half of tomorrow, we will be using Twitter accounts to “tweet” about tweets vis-à-vis Tao Lin’s short stories in his book BED which is being discussed by Carla Bluhm's students at the Coastal College of Georgia. All accounts should not be anonymous, as it will make you inauthentic in your discourse; moreover, all tweets you post are potentially available for public viewing on the internet. Since remaining anonymous is inauthentic, you should use your real name. Other than that, you can respond in any way you find creative, intellectually interesting, or connected to our meta-discussion of and about tweeting. However, please follow the regular rules of “classroom etiquette” while creating your tweets, e.g. being critical is fine, as long as it is done with tact, etc. (i.e. saying, “Shut the fuck up” or “You suck cock” or “You’re proficient at the sucking of cocks” is in poor form).
We will follow each others’ twitter accounts and have a “conversation” about these “conversations” 140 characters at a time. At the end of the discussion you will be required to print out your tweets about tweets and place them in random windshields all over town. In the spirit of the assignment about an assignment you should also read your fellow tweeters tweets about tweets daily as they build into a collective conversation with one another and form a meta-narrative which will take the form of a dominant narrative.
The tweets so far seem redundant and mostly irrelevant.
i dont know about twitter
as in i know about its existence but not about my judgment of it
carla bluhm: "About mid semester, I will assign you a Twitter username and you will register with Twitter.com. During the second half of the semester, after March 8, we will be using Twitter accounts to 'tweet' about Tao Lin’s short stories in his book BED. While our accounts are anonymous, all tweets you post are potentially available for public viewing on the internet. Since remaining anonymous is important for the assignment, you should not use your real name, or the names of anyone associated with the course. Other than that, you can respond to the short stories about Tao’s life in any way you find creative, intellectually interesting, or connected to the course. However, please follow the regular rules of classroom etiquette while creating your tweets, e.g. being critical is fine, as long as it is done with tact, etc. We will follow each others’ twitter accounts and have a “conversation” 140 characters at a time about early adulthood vis-à-vis his stories. At the end of the semester you will be required to print out your tweets and hand them in to me. Aim to create 10 tweets for each of the three short stories that we will read for class for a total of 30 overall. In the spirit of the assignment you should also read your classmates tweets daily as they build into a collective conversation with one another. (Due by May 3)"
i just wonder who have lost his/her love lately, and talking about love is little hard thing
i lose my love on a daily basis.
also i wonder if it was facebook instead
Reading about this Twitter assignment makes me feel like how a 2009 Honda Civic looks. This would be fine, but for two things: a- I don't twitter/tweet/twat,
and
II- I drive a Honda Accord.
that's neat
I wanted to know why everybody was talking about Twitter but when I finally got it I realized how worthless it was.
I want to know why everyone is talking about Tao Lin but I don't want to be conned into supporting something that is worthless again.
Help.
@anonymous
twitter is also good during revolutions and national emergencies
tao lin is good when I am bored reading everybody else
hope this helps
I just finished reading EEEE EEEEE EEEE and my reaction is:
I wanna say the butler did it.
Is this the correct reaction?
@anonymous
i think if you are not interested in something, maybe you should to try to find something other else. try to search. search until you will get something fun! this is very stupid thing that you are concerned with thing you hate. you should to live for yourself. life is too short. but there must to be something fun. maybe twitter is stupid, just somehow some people are doing it, but don't worry about it, some people don't tweet at all too. don't believe thing that everyone seems doing it, people have history for mistake, for example war etc. many people are having mental illness actually, because people know people are going to die one day, must to say good bye. though people try to live their life. and something are really hard. people can't even say their selfish many times. anyway one thing is "do your work", this will help you. do your work until nobody complain to you.
The effects are gradual and the result will vary for each user.(vimax pills) However, further review show that most users experience benefits within the first week. In the first month you can expect erections that stay longer than usual and your penile may even start to become wider. penis enlargement pills - http://www.cucumaerot.com
lol @ "what IS to be done about existence?"
lol....
I am disappointed to see that no one has “tweeted” this yet: “A hungry rat, for example, will self-stimulate faster than a rat that is not hungry. In addition, a hungry rat generally will choose electrical brain stimulation over food, but will not starve to death by always making this choice." It seems so obvious and relevant.
nice re selected tweets

seems like you see the whole world in a different light than normal humans do, man
If I could. I would tweet: "This book—these stories—are a potential device for my own destruction." Also: "It seems as though there appears to be an appearance of depression throughout. Perhaps clinical. Clinical depression is the serious kind. Clinical depression is the kind of depression that requires a clipboard. A therapist with a clipboard. Emphasis on clipboard."
Im one of the students in the class...I didn't understand why the posts had to be anonymous. I stand behind the things that I say and don't care too much if other people agree. I wish more of my fellow students "got" Tao. Some of the comments that people make on the twitter are a little painful. They remind me that I was born and have lived in this sad bible belt bubble my whole life.
I can't reveal my twitter handle because that is simply part of the assignment...sorry. Glad you guys are at least interested though. I have never had a school assignment that gained national exposure on any level. I hope this isn't my 15 minutes of fame. That would be tragic...I was hoping to be Bret Michael's next "Rock Of Love".
I'm actually a student in Dr.Bluhm's Intro. to Human Growth and Development class. I like this project because it helps capture how we're really feeling and what we think about what we're reading. I don't worry about being graded on content like I would for an essay. I may not like or understand half the stuff I'm reading......but it's definitely interesting and makes it hard to put the book down.
Please delete this message....
I'm also one of the students in the class. I'm totally just fucking off here.
i'm depressed.
@Andy: http://www.amazon.com/Better-Never-Have-Been-Existence/dp/0199296421 Seriously. Check it out. It is the rage among "philosophyemos." (I made the term up. But they exist. At least on my campus.) Not saying that you're emo. Although it is a bit pricey. . . .
i thought about pre ordering 'richard yates' but failed to act on the impulse
seems really depressing, will people hate themselves after reading it?
@justinmorris
what does it means to be a "philosophyemo" other than being into philoosphy and being "emo"?
the line:"The central idea of this book is that coming into existence is always a serious harm.." makes me believe that reading this book would make me laugh.
today, and the past few day, i have been feeling slightly less depressed. i'm looking forward to the next few day. i still feel lonely.
i'd like to read this book you have suggested, but i don't really buy too many books due to my low economic status. i'll keep it in mind and search for it at the public library. thanks for the suggestion.
on being "emo": i do believe i am emo, in terms that i am in touch with my emotions. i try not to act upon them because they always seem to lead to negative effects, but i do try to understand them, and why they may be arising, and try to handle my life after this intent. when i'm drunk, i usually act upon my emotions, and they usually lead to disasters such as being fired for "sexual assault."
on "richard yates" @ moran
follow that impulse. it will be worth it.
@Andy:
The book is funny. And it makes me want to write a book review titled: Better to Have Never Been Read: The Harm of Reading “Better Never to Have Been: The Harm of Coming into Existence.” But I’m too lazy and apathetic and lethargic to do it. I have the skills. Just not enough motivation.
Also, David Benatar seems to be a very serious man who is very serious about his work. I think if we laughed at him in real life he would put us shoulder-to-shoulder and shove us into a gas chamber. As we awaited the gas in the gas chamber we wouldn’t find the situation humorous at all. But we would appreciate the irony of it. The gas chamber would gas us and walk away feeling satisfied with its job. The gas chamber would go home to its wife and children and talk about the weather and current events. The gas chamber’s wife would hand him divorce papers. The gas chamber would gas itself and wouldn’t leave a suicide note. It would be a somber day. We probably shouldn’t laugh at that book.
