dear tao
i recently did a painting that features a few cultural figures along with figures from my personal life. one of the figures in the painting is you. if i put this painting on a blog and it 'goes viral' (on a small scale) can i have a free copy of bed? the painting took me far more time than it would take me to write 1500 words.
follow up question: is it creepy that you are in my painting?

i am grateful for the chance to participate in this grassroots promotional campaign. it allows people to obtain physical objects by writing words, something that should exist more but does not. it reminds me of the kind of 'security of purpose' that school provided, and how i imagined the 'real world' (ie work) functioned.

i've already basically done this and doing so again will cause my blog to become 'misaligned' or something along those lines.

nevertheless, i shall venture to write <1500 words "about" sfaa at the nearest juncture of doing productive stuff and not doing productive stuff and eating chips, probably.

'damn'

'forgot' about this

seems like it is a competition for the final two spots

seems like you should put it up to a 'vote' to create more 'grassroots promotional buzz'

i vote for thomas p. levy and panoptican if you do hold a vote

other possible ways to determine who 'deserves' the final two spots:
- 'write off': seems self explanatory but i'm not sure what it is
- 'rap' battle
- twitter 'battle'
- ebay auction
- american apparel 'off': i imagine this would involve modelling whatever american apparel clothes they own and then selecting the 'hottest' persons or else might involve taking clothes 'off'

anyway, good luck in selecting the winners tao.

wow, Everett Bogue's post is really good.

i don't think anyone writing like Tao Lin can be as successful as Tao Lin at what he does, but this doesn't mean his models on information and business can't be used to promote other kinds of writing (including blogging and journalism), music, and other individually-run ventures.

kudos.

Hi Tao, I am a student at Harvard Business School. Indubitabily this promotion is not cost-effective. You are subsidizing people who would have already bought your book, thus you are not making sales money that you would have made otherwise. So this will end up costing you money unless the sales generated by the promotion makes up for that and exceeds it. Is there any way to measure your sales day to day to check on it? You do not want to be giving charity to people who may be rich and inclined to pay for the book. How much will it cost you to send out the copies of the book? I hope you got all these copies for free, otherwise you are acting as Santa Claus to people. But then there is postage, I don't know what it cost's to send each book, but I think for packages it is depending on how far it is going and then you have to send some to Auatrailia and sign these stupid things, I think, and it cost's even more. I think you should just tell everyone that you are happy they blogged or gmailed about you but if they agree, you will not send them the free book because you need and deserve the money more then that they do. I think everyone who posted this will be happy just to have written about you, you really deserve to keep the money,, or maybe you could have a contest like a reality show with all the 26 people and make them write another blog post and then pick the 5 best one's to send books too. This whole contest really seems like you are just being goodhearted and generaous and doing a good thing to reward your fans. You are a great guy but if you're goal is to make money, will this work? I hope so. But then I bought my copy last month and I reread it already. There has to be a twist on this where you can get a better cash flow from it immeditatley.

Dear Tao,
I am slowly working my way through these posts and am thoroughly enjoying them. (Fuck, "thoroughly enjoying them", that sounds so grown-up and lame. Also, I am using capital letters and correct punctuation. What the fuck?) (Okay, now I feel better).

To repeat myself, I think this was a great idea.

I am going to do a two-person grassroots thingie. I am going to loan SFAA to a friend who otherwise would never read it, ask them please to really read it, and have a nice conversation with them about it afterwords. This makes me feel good. This makes me feel like "I am only one blade of grass in this great wide world but that's OK". What can I say, my parents are old hippies and "grassroots" is a "buzzword" I grew up with.

Tao, you should send free books to chernography and Gavin James Bower and not 'penalize' them for 'technicalities' or 'use' your 'discretion' to be 'unfair'.

It discriminates against them if they have dyslexia.

You should send free books to 62 people to be fair.

Hey 'Anonymous', that was really mean. Nice use of inverted commas, though. Well done.
