Write to Melville House and ask them why they are making money off Tao Lin and he needs to resort to selling stuff on eBay to survive.

Something isn't right. I trust Tao when he says that's all he made, and it doesn't make sense because he is popular and everyone I know buys his books.

If you like Tao, write to info@mhpbooks.com

Maybe we can get them to give Tao the money deserves. We can have a sit-in at their bookstore in Brooklyn if enough of you are mad that Melville House is not giving Tao his fair share of money from the good-selling books!

I want to send you some money if you DON'T do the methadone (horrible stuff) or the addreall (more yuk chemicals) or too much iced coffee either. Any eBay opportunity for that?

I am reading Tao Lin's "Oprah Sometimes Thinks" interview.

Interestingly, Buddhist monks are positively or neutrally characterized as "detached," whereas Tao's characters, very similar in their qualities, are negatively described as "apathetic" or "sociopathic." For a long time I have wondered about American culture's addiction to "passion." IMBHO, in my honest Buddhist opinion, passion just leads to war, drinking, overeating, and stupid affairs.

IMHBO, Tao is way ahead of the game.

Tao-

Read half yr novella today. Read some at work at the library here in portland and then my mouth had a cold sore and i decided the remedy was whiskey for the antiseptic analgesic aspect and made the C Bar at 6:31 and they let me have a happy hour priced drink even though I was a minute late so I had a double ancient age bourbon on the rocks for an amazing $5.50 tho I wish they denied me the happy hour then I would have just stiffed them a tip and paid the same price.
is ellen kennedy that girl in PA that opens up the book, sylvia I think? as in plath?
are you a bad shoplifter or did you just get cocky and lazy when you got caught cos you were so seasoned, like i said I've only read 1/2 so maybe you address this issue.
gmail chat written out with quotes as an actual dialog is amazing. now if anyone does it they'l be ripping you off. which sucks in a way.
did you read that latest jonathon letham blog piece in harpers? it seemed late to the game.
i really like yr book so far and may read some more right now though i am inebriated and sushified and watched adventureland which was contrived.
i can't afford a gmail chat with you.

Tao, can you explain why Melville House is cheating you so that you don't earn enough money from your books? You are selling well. How much do you make on your books? What kind of advance do you get from Melville House? Do you have an agent? If not, why not? Don't you think an agent could get someone who is "the voice of Generation Y," the most talented and popular writer of his generation, a true genius (I believe this) more money than you are currently getting?

You have tremendous success and great reviews and sales. Dennis Loy Johnson must make a lot of money for you. MELVILLE HOUSE IS THE HOUSE THAT TAO LIN BUILT! Without you, they are not as profitable.

You seem so smart and bold in other ways but seem to be shy about getting what you deserve from your publisher.

So, I still think everyone should write to Dennis Loy Johnson at Melville House at info@mhpbooks.com.

Let's find out why Tao doesn't have enough money! He should at least be making more than Benjamin Kunkel or Keith Gessen because his books outsell their pathetic efforts.

All Tao's fans and friends: instead of us giving him $5 here and $20 there, let's make sure his publisher is not cheating him and robbing him blind of his justly due profits!

Detachment, also expressed as non-attachment, is a state in which a person overcomes his or her attachment to desire for things, people or concepts of the world and thus attains a heightened perspective.

Apathy (also called impassivity or perfunctoriness) is a state of indifference, or the suppression of emotions such as concern, excitement, motivation and passion. An apathetic individual has an absence of interest or concern to emotional, social, or physical life. They may also exhibit an insensibility or sluggishness.

Cheating is an act of lying, deception, fraud, trickery, imposture, or imposition. Cheating characteristically is employed to create an unfair advantage, usually in one's own interest, and often at the expense of others, Cheating implies the breaking of rules. The term "cheating" is less applicable to the breaking of laws, as illegal activities are referred to by specific legal terminology such as fraud or corruption. Cheating is a primordial economic act: getting more for less, often used when referring to marital infidelity.

Methadone (Symoron, Dolophine, Amidone, Methadose, Physeptone, Heptadon, Phy and many others) is a synthetic opioid, used medically as an analgesic, antitussive and a maintenance anti-addictive for use in patients on opioids. It was developed in Germany in 1937. Although chemically unlike morphine or heroin, methadone also acts on the opioid receptors and thus produces many of the same effects.

Used in the context of performing arts, it is analogous to job interviews in many ways.

The term flapper in the 1920s referred to a "new breed" of young women who wore short skirts, bobbed their hair, listened to the new jazz music, and flaunted their disdain for what was then considered acceptable behavior. Ryan, for example:

The OED says "filet mignon" is a "small tender piece of beef from the end of the tenderloin." (Origin mid 20th cent.: French, literally 'dainty fillet.')

A vegan dictionarist says "filet mignon" is a "4-5" piece of soft muscle of a horribly butchered bovine from the end of the Psoas major muscle anterior to the transverse processes of the lumbar vertebrae, near the kidneys."

Magritte, at the butcher-shop, would always ask for "two horrible kidneys."

[the following is a 'personal' question meant to maybe aid/direct my thoughts into a positive pattern in 'dealing with' a personal problem. i feel like i can 'comfortably relate' to the people here.]

thinking within an existential frame where the "universe is arbitrary" is it 'bad' to have sex with a girl who isn't your girlfriend and then withhold the information from your girlfriend in order to prevent her from emotional "pain and suffering", while simultaneously ignoring the other girl you had sex with in order to prevent her from 'getting her hopes up' and eventually having to experience emotional "pain and suffering"?

Tao, with your 'fame' there is 'high probability' that a larger than usual amount of women will be interested in you sexually. is it being "moral within a moral frame" to not have sex with multiple attractive partners when you feel the desire to do so or can it somehow be described as being "moral within an existential frame"?

(these questions are also open to commenters)

p.s. bid is a cool idea. seems fun.

Marie,

i have never articulated a definition of the term girlfriend. i use it with self-awareness,though. my understanding is that it is one who is your companion/partner. a person with whom you share an intimacy that is comprised of physical, emotional, mental [and perhaps two or three other things not in the english language] aspects.these aspects intersect and cause intimacy to peak at the sexual moment.we assume that the companionship is exclusive due to the low probability for a human being to reach an intimacy as satisfyingly intense with more than one person. having sex with another human other than the partner is seen as a betrayal in that the partner is rejected as an intimate mate despite an unspoken agreement to not be alone together. consequences of this break include excessive selfawareness, sadness, loneliness, grief and a re-emergence into the overwhelming insignificance and anonymity of human life.
