Now that "Richard Yates" by Tao Lin is complete, Richard Yates needs to rise from dead and construct his answer novel, "Tao Lin" by Richard Yates (Melville House, 2010)

what happened to 'second novel'? i liked that one. can i have that one?

i was very excited about your second novel.

now i am a little less excited. stats are boring.

excitement has subsided. now i am 'anticipating' your second novel.

anticipation is not the same as excitement.

stats murdered my excitement.

I like those statistics.

But I don't like math too much.

I changed my mind. I don't like the stats. They are interesting but math makes things boring.

However, I wish I could do something for 800 hours.

why do they wait so long to publish it? is it a marketing technique? or does it take that long to get it ready?

i cant stand that more than half of these commenters commented in the Tao Lin voice.

1:24 PM
Blogger Zack Maddox said...

yes, i think it would be good if people stopped aping tao lin's style. tao is far better at it than you, so stop. find your own voice instead of turning tao lin's into something worse.

Pretty, pretty

I have to laugh at someone getting onto others for "copying" Lin's style.

Do you think Lin's "style" emerged from a black hole in the universe?

Every single writer IS and SHOULD copy other styles.

Would you make the same comment about a musician, or a painter?

Lin could list one hundred authors right now he "copies."

Any author could I'd hope.

2:29 PM
Blogger Tao Lin said...

i didn't feel like anyone was 'copying' anyone in these comments, and i am not opposed to 'copying' things, and i think i almost never think in terms of 'copying' when i read anyone else's writing

i know almost everyone who commented in this post, even in real life, and i liked reading their comments

i don't understand how one can obtain an idea of a style of writing from short comments from varied people.

also as an arbitray aside, is it not better to communicate with someone in a simular style to they use?
Would it not be a bit silly to use a super formal style to comment on tao's blog?

(and as a 'cheap shot', sarah a.'s comment has the style of perhaps 30% or internet comments. Maybe she should get her own style)

[these question are in a neutral-but-maybe-a-little-abashed manner]

I think I use the style of the author whose blogs I post comments on a lot. I don't know if I'm always conscious of it. It's like, I read the post and I go into the brain of that person and I comment and that's how it comes out, because I was in the brain of that person. Plus, it's funner to use other people's styles because my style is dumb. I don't even have a style. I wear plain clothes. I blend.

observational skills are almost null if you haven't realized all of tao lin's blogger links are minor reflections of himself.

he likes what he likes. what is the big deal.

i thoroughly enjoy watching people get 'baited'. this is a fun thread.

wow. this thread got hateful in a hurry. I'm not sure creative writing should be equated with the oncoming American shredding apocolypse in any way shape or form.

i think people need to chill out.

to tao lin seems dangerous etc.

you hate tao
that's your opinion, who cares, why do you think your opinion is so important or whatever that you can be so mean

who made you america's defender
how do you know how to defend america
the set known as 'america' contains tao, therefore you should defend tao... from yourself

you're using racial slurs and making racist comments
tao lin typed 'fuck america'
those are objective observations.
but, how is it okay for you to type racial slurs and make racist comments while it is not okay for tao to type 'fuck america'
you're just really open-minded i guess

zomg you can't spell <- objective statement

i've read some or all of lorrie moore, raymond chandler, pessoa, and miranda july and i like tao's writing
but who cares
that doesn't mean i am a 'better' or 'worse' than other people
it just means i like to read

i've read those people mostly because of this blog ring
thank you for blogging about them
