kafka is 'emo'

below are excerpts from a biography of kafka by ronald hayman
[Kafka] decided to write a frank letter to [his fiancee's father], and show it to [his fiancee] before sending it. It would explain how, for about ten years, he had been increasingly aware of lacking the sense of well-being most people had. Her father might like to recommend a doctor who would examine him and report on his findings.

One Saturday evening [Kafka's sister] came home from the shop to find [Kafka] sitting on the sofa, staring blankly in front of him. Aware he had been eating very little, she asked whether he was going to have supper, but he did not answer, and they just stared at each other.

On Christmas Day 1915, looking back at his diary, [Kafka] realized that over the past three or four years he could have made thousands of entries all more or less identical with the last one, all complaining ineffectually. But, at thirty-two, he could no longer believe, as he had ten years earlier, that it was within his powers to solve the problems that made life so difficult for him.
below is what kafka wrote about suddenly coughing up blood all the time, suicide, and feelings
"What happened was that the brain could no longer stand the troubles and pains being loaded on to it. It said: 'I'm giving up. But if there's anyone else interested in continuing the whole thing, he can take over some of my burden, and things can go on for a while.' The lung volunteered, probably not having much to lose anyway. I wasn't informed about these negotiations between brain and lung, and they may have been ghastly."

"The suicide is the prisoner who sees a gallows erected in the prison yard, mistakenly believes it is for him, breaks out of his cell during the night, goes down and hangs himself."

"I've a growing incapacity for thinking, observation, consolidation of certainties, remembering, speaking, and empathy. I'm turning into stone. In the office I'm becoming increasingly inept. If I can't immerse myself in some work, I'm lost."
the biography reminds me of this biography of richard yates in terms of tone and that the biographers view things existentially, i feel; excerpts of kafka's writing in this biography remind me of the book of disquiet by fernando pessoa

i am almost always controlling myself from unrestrained paragraphs of shit-talking, i have self-control; i'm being honest right now, i really am almost always successfully controlling myself from non-stop shit-talking against almost everything including myself; i am successful "

That my dear friend.
Is where a promo
comes in handy.

Think about it...

I tried to post a comment on the "shit talker" - god i hate that term..- cracker barrel blog below but he wouldn't let me post it because he is a country boy who hates words like "fuck" and "sperm"

It said something along the lines though, of acquiring some of your sperm through donation or if need be with monetary exchange involved. (preferably donation) in order to make an immortal genius being. I told him immortal .. yes like jesus. I also told him this conversation did in fact take place. In a cab on 3rd ave. I have my sister as a witness to the fact that you seemed to be in favor of the idea.

let me introduce Daryl to you tao lin, this is Daryl Strawberry speaking, the GREATEST RIGHT FIELDER OF ALL TIME

Daryl has come to the realization that tao lin does not know how to play
baseball

and as much of a crime as that may be Daryl is here on a peace offering mission,
some words of advice

have you ever tried performance enhancing subtances toa lin? drugs as you
may know them

they've done wonders for Daryl's career and Daryl thinks with a little work and
a few shots a day toa lin can be hittin' hommers too

now Daryl prefers cocaine, but there is a myriad of choices

(Daryl recommends cocaine)

and with the government inditement of writes still a year or two away (for the
use of performance enhancing drugs such as human growth hormone, another good
choice) toa lin can extend his career for another five, ten years while
maintaining a 300 batting average, 50 hommers a year, and a-oh wait that's
Daryl's whiffle ball league stats

toa lin-enahnce your self, enhance your image

(Daryl Strawberry officially endorses the use of cocaine)

ttb, make videos where you go into public and do the same things to people

make one where you pass out pages of my book saying it's the first novel written by a monkey and you're on the street team to promote it

'Cracker Barrel'-which i referenced on that blog, is a country themed restaurant that serves home cookin'. ie: steak, mashed taters, gravy... It isn't uncommon to find people with cowboys hats there. The decor is very farm-ish and woodsy to make the god fearing people of the land feel like they are at their grandmas house when they are really just eating gross crap in a mid western chain. Whatever.. people just want to get fired up.

Tao you should do a blog extensively examining your understanding of existentialism. It woulds be interesting to learn just what exactly you mean when you reference something as "existential". For instance, if you are saying that Kafka expresses existential tendencies in his prose, then are you referring to Kierkegaard use of despair/forlorn? Or is more along the lines of Sartre's understanding in Being in Nothingness? Or is it non-specific? If this final understanding is most explicable, then you should spend some time examining the term. A treatise on the subject would be interesting.

hi brandon, i think i did do a post on it

most of the time i think my use of it is 'sarcastic' or 'intuitive' or something, like how i might use 'emo' but not be able to define it exactly without 'ruining' it
